The History of Waldenwoods Family Recreation Resort

For more than a century, Waldenwoods has welcomed families to a place where life slows down and time together comes naturally. The resort rests along a crystal-clear spring-fed lake and is surrounded by 400 acres of peaceful woodlands, creating a setting that feels timeless and deeply connected to Michigan’s outdoor heritage. Generations have gathered here to relax, explore, and build traditions that last far beyond a single stay.

Founded by the Crouse family in the early 1900s and still family owned today, Waldenwoods carries forward a legacy shaped by care, hospitality, and community. That long-standing commitment guides everything we do, from maintaining historic spaces to creating new opportunities for recreation and connection. The mission remains true to its roots: to enrich the lives of our members through nature, shared experiences, and meaningful time together.

Lakeside cottages, wooded campsites, year-round activities, and gathering spaces all reflect a century of stewardship and a dedication to preserving the spirit of the resort. Waldenwoods continues to grow with each generation, offering a familiar place to return to and a memorable place to share with the next.

Our History & Legacy

The story of Waldenwoods is one of vision, family, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. What began as a dream nearly a century ago has grown into a cherished destination where generations of families continue to make lasting memories.

1837 – The Beginning

The story starts with the Crouse Family, who first settled on this land in Livingston County, Michigan. Their respect for nature and community laid the foundation for what would one day become Waldenwoods.

1924 – The Vision of J. Robert Crouse

In 1924, J. Robert Crouse envisioned a place where people could retreat from the rush of modern life and reconnect with nature. Inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s writings in Walden, he began developing the property into a peaceful haven and named it “Waldenwoods.”

1930s–1950s – Building the Foundation

The first lodges and cottages were built during this period, reflecting the craftsmanship and charm that still define Waldenwoods today. Families began gathering here to enjoy the lake, the woods, and the sense of togetherness that the resort inspired.

1960s–1980s – Growth and Community

Waldenwoods expanded into a full recreation resort with camping areas, event spaces, and family-friendly amenities. The Crouse Family remained dedicated to creating a place where people could escape, relax, and connect.

1990s–2000s – A Modern Family Resort

With modern comforts and enhanced facilities, Waldenwoods continued to evolve while preserving its historic charm. Members began returning year after year, passing down the tradition of Waldenwoods from one generation to the next.

Today - A Legacy That Lives On

Still family-owned and operated, Waldenwoods remains true to its founding mission: to improve our members’ quality of life. From lakeside adventures to community events, the resort continues to blend nature, recreation, and family spirit, just as J. Robert Crouse imagined nearly a century ago.
